JDM or Rebuilt?

January 31, 2018

What is the difference between a rebuilt engine and a JDM engine?

JDM Engines

If an engine, transmission, or part is referred to as “JDM” it means it was originally sold in Japan. When a vehicle is recycled, these parts may be exported to the USA or another country. Exported used engines and transmissions from Japan are resold as “JDM swaps” or direct replacements for RoW and US market vehicles. Popular swaps include Honda B20B and F23A’s, Toyota 1ZZ-FE and 2AZFE’s, Nissan SR20DET and VG30’s, and Subaru EJ20 and EJ25’s.

Rebuilt Engines

Rebuilt, or “overhauled” engines have been dismantled , inspected and cleaned. Internal components replaced may include rings, bearings, gaskets and seals. They are usually much more expensive than used engines due to costly parts, and a labor intensive rebuild process. An overhauled engine may or may not last longer than a used engine. While rebuilds come with the expectation of higher quality than a used engine, they can have a repair or return rate of up to 25% depending on the quality of the rebuilder.
